Paint protection film (PPF) is a specialised protective film applied to automotive paint to preserve its lustre, minimise damage from environmental contaminants, road debris, and minor impact.
PPF can help maintain the vehicle's resale value and prevent having to be repainted due to road damage. The average lifespan of PPF is 3-10 years, depending on various factors such as frequency of washing, exposure to elements, amount of traffic and level of maintenance.
While PPF does not last forever, it does provide a cost efficient solution for protecting a vehicle’s paint from the everyday wear and tear.
DIY PPF is a new way of applying PPF film from the comfort of your own home and whilst it's not being fitted by a professional, you can still expect to see the same average lifespan of the film. DIY PPF commits to providing PPF film that is free from defects including cracking, blistering, bubbling, delaminating or discolouring. We expect to see customers PPF still looking great after a period of about 7 years but if it's well looked after, you could expect to see a lifespan of much more.
Some top tips for keeping your PPF looking great and preserving its life.
- Frequently wash your vehicle
It's important not to allow too much dirt to build up on the surface of the PPF film. Keep it clean and regularly was with some and water or regular car shampoo.
- Be careful using a jet wash!
Jet washing PPF is fine, but you do need to be careful, especially around the edges of the film. You should keep the nozzle at least 50cm away from edges and set the jet washer to a wide spray in order to prevent lifting.
- Remove bird droppings and other abrasive contaminants as soon as they appear!
- Remove dirt or wax build up along the edges of the film by using alcohol and a lint free cloth. This will stop the edges turning black over time.
- You can ceramic coat your PPF! Treat it with a flexible ceramic coating or apply a non-abrasive wax twice a year to keep your PPF film looking glossy.
We hope these tips help! As ever, safe driving.
